What makes a useful website slug?

A good slug is readable, stable, descriptive, and short enough to scan. It should identify the page without stuffing every keyword into the path. Hyphens make word boundaries clear, while lowercase avoids inconsistent variants on case-sensitive systems.

Do not change an indexed page's URL merely to make it prettier. If a published slug must change, create a permanent redirect from the old address and update internal links, canonical tags, and sitemaps.

How this generator cleans text

  1. Common special Latin letters are transliterated and combining accent marks are removed.
  2. Ampersands become the word “and”; apostrophes and punctuation are removed.
  3. Remaining letter and number groups are joined with one chosen separator.
  4. Optional stop-word removal drops a small English list when other words remain.
  5. An optional limit ends at the previous complete word where practical.

Transliteration is necessarily incomplete across the world's writing systems. Preserve meaningful native-language characters when your site's URL policy supports them.

Frequently asked questions

Is a slug the full URL?

No. It is usually one readable path segment after the domain, such as slug-generator in this page's address.

Should I remove stop words?

Only when the result stays natural and unambiguous. Removing every short word can make a path harder to understand.

Does the slug generator check whether a URL already exists?

No. It transforms text locally and cannot inspect your routing system, CMS, redirects, or existing pages.
