Calculate words and characters
What this word calculator counts
Words are detected with locale-aware browser segmentation when supported. Character totals include spaces and punctuation; the second character figure excludes all whitespace. Paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines, while line count includes each manual line break.
Character limits and SMS estimates
Enter a limit such as 32, 150, or 500 to check remaining space. The SMS figure is a planning estimate using common 160/153-character GSM-like and 70/67-character Unicode segment sizes. Real encoding can differ because some GSM characters use two units and carriers may handle messages differently.
Reading and speaking time
The estimates use 238 words per minute for reading and 130 words per minute for speaking. They are simple planning benchmarks, not measurements of a particular reader or speaker.
Frequently asked questions
Do punctuation marks count as characters?
Yes. The character total includes punctuation, spaces, and line breaks.
Does it count Chinese, Japanese, or Thai words?
On modern browsers, locale-aware segmentation can identify word-like units in many languages that do not separate every word with spaces. Results still depend on the browser's language data.
