Normalize extra spaces reduces repeated spaces and tabs to one space while keeping line breaks. Use the more destructive modes only when words or lines should be joined.

Spaces are only one kind of whitespace
Whitespace can include ordinary spaces, tabs, newlines, carriage returns, form feeds, and non-breaking spaces. These characters may look similar but behave differently in editors, source code, spreadsheets, and web pages.
The cleaner converts non-breaking spaces to ordinary spaces before applying the selected mode. It does not remove zero-width characters, bidirectional controls, or every invisible Unicode formatting character.
Examples
| Input problem | Recommended mode |
|---|---|
| Several spaces between normal words | Normalize extra spaces |
| Indentation or tabs should disappear but lines stay | Remove horizontal spaces and tabs |
| An identifier must contain no spacing at all | Remove all whitespace |
| Every line has unwanted outer padding | Trim every line |
| Code or data fails checks because of end-of-line spaces | Remove trailing spaces only |
Frequently asked questions

Yes in the horizontal-space and all-whitespace modes. Use normalization if words should remain separated.
