Line breaks, paragraphs, and wrapping
A line break is an explicit newline character. Visual wrapping is different: a browser or editor can display a long sentence on several screen lines without adding new characters. Text copied from fixed-layout PDFs and OCR often contains hard breaks at each printed line, which is why it pastes badly.
Paragraph-preserving mode treats one or more blank lines as a paragraph boundary. It cannot infer every author's intent, so review poetry, addresses, code, tables, and lists before replacing the original.
Choose the right mode
| Mode | Result | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve paragraphs | Single breaks become spaces; blank boundaries remain | PDF, OCR, email, and wrapped prose |
| Join everything | All lines become one paragraph | Search strings and single-line fields |
| Remove blank lines only | Non-empty rows stay separate | Lists and exported records |
| Custom replacement | Every break becomes chosen text | Comma, pipe, HTML, or other delimited output |
Remove line breaks in specific applications
For an existing document or workbook, application-native methods may preserve structure better. See how to remove line breaks in Word and how to remove line breaks in Excel.
Frequently asked questions
Does it handle Windows and Unix line endings?
Yes. CRLF, LF, and old-style CR endings are normalized before processing.
Can it keep lists intact?
Use “Remove blank lines only” when every non-empty row must remain separate. Paragraph mode intentionally joins single line breaks.
Can it repair every copied PDF automatically?
No. Columns, headers, footers, hyphenated line endings, tables, and reading order may require manual review.
