Tip = tip base × percentage ÷ 100. A 20% tip on 80 is 80 × 0.20 = 16.
Calculate a percentage tip
Tip before tax or after tax
The calculator shows both choices instead of declaring one universal rule. Pre-tax mode applies the percentage only to the service subtotal. After-tax mode applies it to the subtotal plus the entered tax. Customs, receipts, service-charge rules, and personal choices differ, so inspect the actual tip base.
How a service charge is handled
Enter a mandatory or already-added service charge separately. The tool credits that amount toward your selected gratuity target and shows any additional tip needed. Confirm whether the charge reaches staff; a receipt label alone does not establish how it is distributed.
Worked 20% example
For an 80 pre-tax subtotal, 8 tax, and a 20% pre-tax tip, the target tip is 16 and the final bill is 104. Split between two people, each pays 52. Choosing after-tax instead makes the percentage base 88.
How much should you tip?
This calculator performs arithmetic, not etiquette. Percentages vary by service type, country, local custom, and your judgment. A payment-screen suggestion is not a mathematical requirement. For salon-specific allocation, use the hair stylist tip calculator or pedicure tip calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 15% quickly?
Ten percent plus half of ten percent equals 15%. On 60, that is 6 + 3 = 9.
Does splitting change the tip percentage?
No. The total tip stays the same; the final amount is simply divided among the entered number of people.
