Calculate and split a salon tip

How the salon allocation works

Total tip equals service cost multiplied by the selected percentage. The assistant percentage applies to the tip—not the whole service bill—and is divided evenly among the entered assistants. The lead stylist receives the remainder.

Example with a stylist and assistant

On a 120 service at 20%, the total tip is 24. If 25% of that tip is allocated to one assistant, the assistant receives 6 and the lead stylist receives 18. Change the allocation if the services were divided differently.

Hairdresser, barber, colorist, and assistant

The arithmetic is identical for a haircut, color appointment, blowout, or barber service. What differs is who performed the work and how you want to divide the gratuity. Ask the salon when you are unsure whether assistants share the main tip or are tipped separately.

This page does not set an expected percentage

Customs and policies vary. The default is an editable example, not a recommendation. Enter the amount you choose and check for a service charge before adding another tip. For a basic bill and tax calculation, use the percentage to tip calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What if there are no assistants?

Enter zero assistants. The full calculated tip is allocated to the lead stylist.

Should product purchases be included?

This tool uses the amount you enter. If you intend to tip only on services, exclude retail products from that amount.
