Person's share = pool × person's weight ÷ total weight. In points mode, weight = hours × role points.
Split a tip pool
Three distribution methods
| Method | Weight per person | When it models |
|---|---|---|
| Equal | 1 | Every included person receives the same share |
| Hours | Hours worked | Everyone earns the same pool rate per hour |
| Weighted | Hours × role points | Both time and agreed role weighting affect payout |
Why the last row can differ by a cent
Individual proportional shares may contain fractions of a cent. The calculator rounds each payout to cents and places the small remainder in the final row so the distributed amount exactly equals the entered pool. This is visible in the reconciliation output.
Worked point-hours example
A person working 8 hours at 1 point has 8 point-hours. Someone working 4 hours at 0.5 points has 2 point-hours. If those are the only workers, the first receives 8/10 of the pool and the second receives 2/10.
Legal and policy limitation
This tool performs arithmetic only. It does not determine which workers may participate, whether a distribution policy is lawful, or how cash, card fees, taxes, wages, or reporting should be handled. Use only an approved roster, pool amount, and method under the rules that apply to the workplace.
Frequently asked questions
