JSON pretty formatter

What pretty printing changes

Pretty printing parses valid JSON and serializes it with line breaks and indentation. Values and types remain the same. Optional sorting changes object property order, which is useful for comparison but may create a larger diff than whitespace-only formatting.

Strict JSON validation

The browser's JSON parser rejects comments, trailing commas, single-quoted strings, undefined, and unquoted property names. Those features may exist in JavaScript or JSON-like configuration formats but are not valid JSON under RFC 8259.

Pretty print versus stringify

JavaScript uses JSON.stringify(value, null, 2) for two-space output. Selecting Minify performs the same serialization without indentation. See MDN's JSON.stringify() reference.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit JSON here?

Yes. Edit the input freely, then format or minify it again. Invalid syntax produces an error instead of altered output.

Is “formatter JSON” the same task?

Yes. JSON formatter, beautifier, indenter, and pretty printer commonly describe the same whitespace-formatting operation.
