Carry rule
F₁₆ + 1₁₆ = 10₁₆

Hex addition carries at 16. For example, 11 + 15 = 26 in decimal, so B + F = 1A in hexadecimal.

Add hexadecimal numbers with steps

How hexadecimal addition works

Align the numbers on the right and add from right to left. The procedure is the same as decimal addition except that a column carries when its decimal total reaches 16. Divide the column total by 16: write the remainder as the current hex digit and carry the quotient.

Hex addition examples

ProblemDecimal checkHex sum
A + 510 + 5 = 15F
F + 115 + 1 = 1610
1A + 2B26 + 43 = 6945
ABC + 9F2748 + 159 = 2907B5B

Hexadecimal digit values

Hexadecimal uses 0–9 followed by A–F. The letters represent decimal values A = 10, B = 11, C = 12, D = 13, E = 14, and F = 15. See the decimal to hex table for a printable reference.

Scope and limitations

The calculator accepts non-negative whole hexadecimal numbers up to 512 digits, with optional spaces, underscores, or 0x prefixes. It does not model fixed-width overflow, signed two's-complement arithmetic, or fractional hex values.

Frequently asked questions

When do I carry in hexadecimal addition?

Carry whenever a column's decimal total is 16 or more.

What is F plus 1 in hexadecimal?

It is 10₁₆, just as 9 + 1 becomes 10 in decimal.

Can I check hex addition in decimal?

Yes. Convert both operands to decimal, add them, and convert the sum back to hexadecimal. The calculator prints this check automatically.
