Byte range
0₁₀ = 00₁₆   ·   255₁₀ = FF₁₆

Hex uses 0–9 and A–F. An unsigned 8-bit byte covers 256 values, so its complete range is 00 through FF.

Decimal to hexadecimal converter

Enter a non-negative whole number. The result is exact and includes the repeated divisions by 16.

Decimal to hexadecimal table: 0 to 255

Values are padded to two hex digits so the table also works as a complete byte reference. Padding does not change the numerical value: 0A and A both mean decimal 10.

How to convert decimal to hexadecimal

  1. Divide the decimal integer by 16.
  2. Record the remainder. Use A–F for remainders 10–15.
  3. Divide the quotient by 16 and repeat until the quotient is zero.
  4. Read the remainders from last to first.

Example: 255 ÷ 16 gives quotient 15 and remainder 15. The quotient and remainder are both F in hex, so 255₁₀ = FF₁₆.

Common decimal and hex values

DecimalHexWhy it is common
100AFirst hex letter value
1610One full base-16 place
3220Power-of-two boundary
1277FLargest signed positive 8-bit value
12880Highest bit in one byte
255FFLargest unsigned 8-bit value

Why hexadecimal is used

Hex is a compact way to write binary patterns: each hex digit represents exactly four bits, so two hex digits represent one byte. That makes values such as bit masks, memory addresses, byte sequences, and color channels easier to scan. To inspect the bits directly, use the binary to hexadecimal converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is 255 in hexadecimal?

255 decimal is FF hexadecimal.

Why does the byte table stop at 255?

Eight binary bits create 2⁸ = 256 patterns, numbered from 0 to 255.

Are lowercase and uppercase hex letters different?

No. ff and FF represent the same number. Uppercase is used here for a consistent table.
