Calculate slope from a topographic map

How the map calculation works

At 1:25,000, one centimetre on the map represents 250 metres on the ground. Four centimetres represents 1,000 metres. A 100-metre elevation gain over that horizontal distance is a 10% grade.

Measure horizontal distance consistently

Follow the intended horizontal route on the map, use the map's printed representative fraction, and take elevation change from contour values rather than counting lines alone. Map projection, printing scale, and path curvature limit precision. For a known real-world run, use the general slope calculator.
