Convert a ratio to a fraction
Ratio fraction versus fraction of the total
The ratio 2:3 can be written as the comparison fraction 2/3. But if it describes two parts of one group, there are 2 + 3 = 5 total parts, so the first group is 2/5 of the whole and the second is 3/5.
| Question | For a:b | For 2:3 |
|---|---|---|
| First compared with second | a/b | 2/3 |
| First as part of combined whole | a/(a+b) | 2/5 |
| Second as part of combined whole | b/(a+b) | 3/5 |
Frequently asked questions
