Long Division Practice Questions

Use paper for the working. Some questions divide exactly and others have a remainder.

How to Answer Long Division Questions

    1. Start with the leftmost digit or group large enough for the divisor.
    2. Write how many times the divisor fits above that position.
    3. Multiply the new quotient digit by the divisor and subtract.
    4. Bring down the next dividend digit and repeat.
    5. When no digits remain, record any leftover as the remainder.

    How to Check Every Answer

Multiply the divisor by the whole-number quotient, then add the remainder. The total must equal the original dividend. The remainder must also be zero or greater and smaller than the divisor.

    For example, 157 ÷ 12 = 13 remainder 1. The check is 12×13 + 1 = 157.

    Common Long Division Mistakes

    • Skipping a zero in the quotient when the divisor does not fit into a place.
    • Subtracting the wrong multiplication fact.
    • Forgetting to bring down exactly one digit at a time.
    • Reporting a remainder equal to or greater than the divisor.
