Data URL versus raw Base64
A data URL begins with a MIME declaration such as data:image/png;base64,. Raw Base64 contains only the encoded bytes. HTML and CSS normally need the full data URL so the browser knows the media type.
When image Base64 is useful
Small icons or self-contained examples can be embedded without another request. Large photos are usually better as normal files because Base64 is larger, less cache-friendly, and harder to inspect. The Base64 data URL uses the standard alphabet described by RFC 4648.
Frequently asked questions
Can I decode Base64 without the prefix?
Yes. Choose the correct image type, paste the raw Base64, and preview it.
Can I encode ordinary text here?
Use the Base64 string encoder for UTF-8 text and URL-safe output.
