How to Do Scientific Notation on a Calculator
Enter the coefficient, press EE, EXP, or ×10ⁿ, then enter the exponent. The exponent-entry key already supplies “× 10,” so do not type it twice.

A display such as 6.02E23 represents the same number.
Build the calculator key sequence
Which scientific-notation key should you use?
| Key label | Meaning | Typical entry |
|---|---|---|
| EE | Enter exponent of 10 | 6.02 EE 23 |
| EXP | Enter exponent of 10 | 6.02 EXP 23 |
| ×10ⁿ or ×10ˣ | Power-of-ten template | 6.02 ×10ⁿ 23 |
| E in an app | Text notation for ×10ⁿ | 6.02E23 |
How to enter a negative exponent
For 3.4 × 10⁻⁵, enter 3.4, press EE/EXP/×10ⁿ, use the dedicated negative or sign-change key, then type 5. The subtraction key may not work as a unary negative on every calculator.
Normal, scientific, and engineering display modes
Entry and display are separate. You can enter a power of ten even when the calculator is in normal display mode. SCI mode forces results into scientific notation; ENG mode uses exponents divisible by three. Consult the model's setup menu because the exact sequence varies.
To convert the display manually, use the standard form converter.
Common calculator mistakes
- Typing
× 10and then pressing EE, which multiplies by 10 twice. - Using the subtraction key instead of the negative/sign-change key for a negative exponent.
- Confusing EE with Euler's number e.
- Assuming a rounded display contains more significant figures than were entered.
Frequently asked questions
What does EE mean?
It means “enter exponent” and supplies the power-of-ten part of scientific notation.
Why does my answer display as E notation?
The screen uses a compact format. For example, 1.5E6 means 1.5 × 10⁶.
Can a basic calculator enter scientific notation?
If it lacks EE, EXP, or a power key, calculate the power of ten separately or use a scientific-calculator app.
