Calculating hips-to-waist ratio
Divide the hip circumference by the waist circumference. With 100 cm hips and an 80 cm waist:
100 ÷ 80 = 1.25
The answer is also 1.25 if both values are converted to inches because the unit conversion cancels out. Do not mix centimeters and inches.
How to measure waist and hips
The World Health Organization’s data-gathering protocol places the waist measurement at the midpoint between the lower margin of the last palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest. Measure at the end of a normal breath. Measure hip circumference around the maximum circumference of the buttocks.
- Stand with feet together and weight evenly distributed.
- Use a stretch-resistant tape held horizontal to the floor.
- Keep the tape snug without compressing the skin.
- Record both values in the same unit and repeat if the tape was tilted.
Other programs may define the waist site differently. Do not compare results taken with different protocols as if they were identical.
What does hips-to-waist ratio mean?
HWR compares two external body circumferences. A value above 1 means the measured hip circumference is greater than the waist circumference; a value below 1 means the waist is greater. The number does not directly measure visceral fat, total body fat, fitness, or an individual probability of disease.
Most public-health literature instead reports the reciprocal waist-to-hip ratio. Annex A of the WHO consultation report lists WHR values of 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women as historical references associated with substantially increased risk of metabolic complications. These are population-level references, not universal diagnostic boundaries.
Hips-to-waist ratio versus waist-to-hip ratio
The word order changes the formula, so this calculator returns the requested hips-to-waist result first and the standard waist-to-hip result second:
