Calculate the difference between two dates

Elapsed days versus inclusive days

From January 1 to January 2, one day elapses. An inclusive event count treats both January 1 and January 2 as counted dates, producing two. Choose the definition that matches your deadline, booking, or record.

Calendar difference versus total days

A calendar span borrows across real month boundaries to report completed years, months, and days. Total days measures the entire elapsed duration. These are complementary answers rather than interchangeable approximations.

Weekday count

The weekday result excludes Saturdays and Sundays. It does not infer national, regional, religious, company, or market holidays. Confirm the governing calendar for payroll, legal, shipping, financial, or contractual use.

How to calculate date difference in Excel

=B2-A2 returns elapsed days when A2 is the start and B2 the end. =DATEDIF(A2,B2,"y"), "ym", and "md" return completed years, remaining months, and remaining days when the start is not later than the end. =NETWORKDAYS(A2,B2) counts weekdays inclusively and can accept a holiday range.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the end date is earlier?

The magnitude is calculated after ordering the dates, and the result identifies that the entered end date came first.

Are daylight-saving changes included?

Dates are compared at UTC midnight, so a clock change does not turn a calendar day into 23 or 25 hours.

Can I use the result for a legal deadline?

Verify the governing rule. Deadlines may exclude holidays, use local time, count service days specially, or apply jurisdiction-specific inclusivity.
