Verify the Excel BMI formula
Metric BMI formula for Excel
If B2 contains kilograms and C2 contains centimeters, enter =B2/(C2/100)^2 in D2. The parentheses convert centimeters to meters before the height is squared.
Imperial Excel formula
If B2 is pounds and C2 is total inches, use =703*B2/C2^2. Do not mix pounds with centimeters or kilograms with inches.
Adult category formula
=IFS(D2<18.5,"Underweight",D2<25,"Healthy weight",D2<30,"Overweight",D2<35,"Class 1 obesity",D2<40,"Class 2 obesity",TRUE,"Class 3 obesity")These are the CDC adult categories. Label the column “adult screening category,” and do not use it for children or teenagers; pediatric interpretation requires age- and sex-specific percentiles.
Common spreadsheet errors
- Entering 175 centimeters as 175 meters.
- Using feet without converting the full height to inches.
- Rounding height or weight before calculating.
- Applying adult categories to people under age 20.
Keep the unrounded value
Format D2 to one decimal place for display, but keep the underlying value unrounded so later comparisons and summaries use the original calculation. For a simple one-person result, use the BMI calculator using cm and kg.
